Cambodia Announces Five-Month Fishing Ban Starting This Weekend

PHNOM PENH, May 28, 2024 — The Fisheries Administration under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries has announced an annual fishing ban across multiple provinces in Cambodia, effective from June 1 to October 31, 2024.

This seasonal prohibition is enforced to preserve fish populations during their critical breeding and growth periods. The ban will cover all major fishing zones across several provinces including Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, Rattanakiri, Mondulkiri, Kratie, Thbong Khmum, Kampong Cham, and select areas in Phnom Penh and northern Kandal province along the north of Chaktomuk River. These regions will observe the ban from June 1 to September 30.

Additionally, the fishing zones in Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Takeo, and Kampong Speu provinces, along with certain parts of Phnom Penh and southern Kandal province beyond the south of Chaktomuk River, will adhere to the ban from July 1 to October 31.

During these ban periods, the use of all fishing gear, except for small-scale family fishing, is strictly prohibited. This measure is intended to help replenish fish stocks by preventing overfishing during the peak spawning season, thereby supporting sustainable fisheries and local livelihoods dependent on fishing.

The Fisheries Administration urges all local fishermen and related businesses to comply with the ban and support conservation efforts to ensure the health and sustainability of Cambodia's aquatic resources.
